Azens - Part 1 (artist-built entrance), 1990
Two floors of an abandoned building (the Azens bldg.) in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh were acquired to create a collaborative public artwork.

Azens - Part 1 , 1990

The first level was Hardesty's dark room, consisting of a circle of black lights, 2 gilt speakers with candles, and a video the artist's eye projected onto a curtain of water vapor, looking about the room. (The un-lit vapor is invisible in the darkness.) Visitors could walk through the floating holograph-like eye image, disturbing the vapor and thus the image, and then view the eye from the opposite side.

On the floor above, the second half of the piece was completed by the artist team, Jones & Ginzel.
